Patricia Cancelo, sculptor, painter and journalist, has donated a collection of sculptures and paintings, valued at 10,000 euros, to the Sant Pau, in order to start two research projects in the field of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum in women affected by Covid-19. These two studies are part of the more than 30 works initiated by the Sant Pau Research Institute in the field of Covid-19.
The two research projects, promoted thanks to this donation, are coordinated by Dr. Elisa Llurba, director of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Hospital de Sant Pau and head of the Perinatal and Women’s Medicine Research Group at the Hospital de Sant Pau Research Institute, and both aim to deepen knowledge of the consequences of Covid-19 on pregnant women.
The first study, already underway, will evaluate the impact of Covid-19 infection in the first trimester of pregnancy and its impact on placental function. To evaluate the data, markers of placental function, fetal growth and the incidence of obstetric, maternal and neonatal complications will be analyzed. This is an observational study of the pregnant population, without therapeutic intervention, which will be conducted in women with confirmed Covid-19 infection. The Hospital de Sant Pau, the Maternity Hospital of the Hospital Clínic and the Hospital San Juan de Dios are participating in the study.
The second study, in which eleven centres in the State are collaborating, will focus on the maternal placental and cardiac function of pregnant women affected by Covid-19 to predict poor pregnancy and perinatal outcomes. The aim of this work is to identify the main prognostic factors of maternal and fetal well-being by developing predictive algorithms that improve clinical control and the time of completion of pregnancy in women who are positive for the new coronavirus.

Jewelry for research
Patricia Cancelo has already collaborated with Sant Pau in the creation and design of a collection of jewellery to raise funds for the “Entre Mares” Day, which will be organised for the second time by the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department of the Hospital de Sant Pau in 2021.
Now, and on the occasion of the pandemic, the artist has expanded the collection with a specially created edition to promote the fight against Covid-19, through research. The collection can be purchased directly in the shop at the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau or by sending an e-mail to the Communication Department of the Hospital de Sant Pau (comunicacio@santpau.cat) to reserve the pieces.
