The Research Institute, established on June 4, 1992, is a scientific foundation whose mission is to promote basic, clinical, epidemiological, and healthcare research in the fields of health sciences and biomedicine. The main aims of the Institute are to improve people’s health and quality of life through the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge, training of researchers at the international level, the generation of health care innovations, and the application of advances in care practices and health policies.<\/p>\n

The Institute, located on the Sant Pau Campus, is a biomedical research center of excellence. It has been affiliated with the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) since 2009 and it has been a member the CERCA system in Catalonia since 2011.<\/p>\n

The Institute has its own team of researchers as well as affiliated researchers. These investigators carry out their research work in multidisciplinary groups, performing both basic and clinical research, in collaboration with researchers from other \u201csister\u201d organizations located on the Sant Pau campus and the surrounding area.\u00a0 Since 2011, the Institute has been recognized as a high-level health research centre whose objectives are to develop new techniques and processes through innovation in health care.<\/p>\n

The Research Institute is one of the most active and productive research centres in Catalonia, especially in translational research and in the integration of new discoveries into healthcare practice.
\nIn November 2018, the Institute formally signed the\u00a0Code of Conduct for CERCA\u00a0 centres.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 2020, the Institute signed a Letter of Commitment to gender equality in research, which is supported by 19 research and health care centres in Catalonia. This letter was read at the “Summit for Women\u2019s Advancement and Leadership in Health Research” on October 22, 2019 in Girona.<\/p>\n

The research building, inaugurated on November 15, 2018, was built on the Sant Pau campus, thus facilitating the continuous exchange of knowledge and interaction among basic and clinical researchers. This large building (9681 m2) is spread over five floors with modern research facilities. It was conceived and designed to meet strong environmental and functional criteria. It is primary made with prefabricated, modular, easily-recyclable materials.<\/p>\n

In June 2020, this building was awarded the LEED GOLD certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. This certificate indicates that the building is an example of energy efficiency and sustainability, both in its construction and in its useful life.
