About the Unit / Research Group

The Clinical and Translational Cardiology Research Group is a multidisciplinary research group focused on cardiovascular research. In 2024, the group published 82 research papers, with a total impact factor of 814.4 points.

The group’s research lines include basic and clinical electrophysiology, heart failure and heart transplantation, ischaemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, cardiac imaging, cardiac modelling, 3D printing and bioengineering.

The group has access to all IR Sant Pau research facilities, including the animal experimentation facility. This facility has 5 operating rooms equipped with X-ray systems, anaesthesia units, electrophysiological mapping and ablation systems identical to those used in clinical practice.

Dr José M. Guerra-Ramos is Head of the Clinical and Translational Cardiology Research Group and leader of CIBERCV, the cardiovascular research network funded by the Spanish Government. He is a specialist in Cardiology and Arrhythmology and carries out his clinical activity in the Arrhythmia Unit of the Department of Cardiology. He is also an Associate Professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and has delivered numerous presentations at national and international conferences and authored numerous research publications.

About the project

This project is funded through a grant from the Fundació La Marató de TV3 and focuses on a new technique for the treatment of arrhythmias: pulsed field ablation using electroporation.

The main hypothesis of the project is that controlled areas of reversible and irreversible electroporation can be created in cardiac tissue. In addition, the project aims to describe new methods to accurately detect the boundary between reversibly and irreversibly electroporated areas based on measurements of local electrograms and electrical impedance.

This precise delimitation will enable optimisation of pulsed field ablation, maximising its effectiveness and improving its safety.

The project is being carried out in collaboration between the Clinical and Translational Cardiology Research Group at IR Sant Pau, led by Dr Guerra-Ramos, and the Biomedical Electronics Research Group (BERG) at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, led by Professor Antoni Ivorra.

Essential requirements

  • Minimum qualification required: Higher Vocational Training qualification (Advanced Vocational Training Programme/FPII) or equivalent.
  • Oral and written knowledge of both official languages of Catalonia or, failing this, the selected candidate must demonstrate, or commit to acquiring within a maximum period of one year, an adequate command of both official languages of Catalonia.
  • Intermediate proficiency in office software tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).

Desirable qualifications

  • Experience working with in silico, in vitro and in vivo models.
  • Accreditation to work with laboratory animals (mouse, rat, rabbit, pig).
  • Programming knowledge (Matlab, Python, R).
  • Knowledge of statistics (SPSS, GraphPad Prism, R).
  • Preparation of laboratory reagents and solutions.
  • Preparation of materials for cell cultures.
  • Collection of cellular and tissue samples from laboratory animals.
  • Preparation of OCT and paraffin blocks.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and willingness to learn.
  • Proactive approach to problem solving.

Responsibilities

  • Performing in silico, in vitro and in vivo experiments.
  • Supporting the application of laboratory techniques:
    • Cell culture.
    • Tissue processing for molecular, lipid and immunohistochemical studies.
    • Immunohistochemistry techniques (preparation of OCT and paraffin blocks, preparation of tissue sections for staining, lipid staining and extracellular matrix staining).

  • Project supported by the Fundació La Marató de TV3, grant number 202320-30.
  • Annual working time of 1,627.50 hours (37.5 hours/week).
  • Salary according to the applicable collective agreement.
  • Appointment within the Clinical and Translational Cardiology Research Group.
