Chronic Respiratory Diseases

Translational Medicine
Malalties Respiratòries Cròniques

This group operates closely with the Department of Respiratory Medicine and Allergy at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. Boasting a robust history in pulmonary science, the group integrates clinical and translational approaches to investigate a wide spectrum of chronic respiratory conditions. The facility houses a basic science laboratory dedicated to molecular biology and animal modeling. Furthermore, the group is committed to the clinical evaluation of respiratory techniques, notably bronchoscopy and non-invasive ventilation.

Main Lines of Research

  • Asthma, Allergy, COPD, and Chronic Cough. (Crespo, Astrid)
  • Chronic Bronchial Infection and Bronchiectasis. (De la Rosa, David)
  • Interstitial Lung Diseases. (Castillo, Diego)
  • Interventional Pulmonology. (Pajares, Virginia)
  • Respiratory Failure and Non-invasive Ventilation. (Peñacoba, Patricia)
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea. (Fortuna, Ana)

Scientific Challenges

  • Consolidate a leading clinical trial unit in respiratory diseases.
  • Capture pre-clinical development contracts from the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, using the capabilities of our basic research lab and experimental animal models.
  • Recruit research trainees seeking a doctoral degree.
  • Support the development of multidisciplinary research networks such as the Barcelona Respiratory Network and the Programme for Integrated Research for Asthma of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR), and collaborate with or become involved in existing networks such as CIBER-Respiratory Disorders.
  • Achieve and transfer pharmaceutical discovery in the core research line of the basic science lab.
