Forbes and Forbes Women have included Dr. Manel Esteller in the selection of “Top 50 Health Expert Science Communicators in Spain,” a recognition that highlights the role of professionals and researchers who help bring biomedical knowledge closer to society through different communication channels. The initiative recognizes profiles with the ability to generate social impact through scientific communication, media participation, book publishing, digital activity, and the promotion of rigorous and accessible health information.
The selection prepared by Forbes brings together professionals from a wide range of fields, including biomedical researchers, physicians, science communicators, and health-focused content creators, with the aim of recognizing the growing importance of science communication at a time marked by information overload and the circulation of unverified content in digital environments.
Dr. Esteller is Head of the Cancer Epigenetics Group at the Institut de Recerca Sant Pau (IR Sant Pau), an ICREA Research Professor, and Professor of Genetics at the University of Barcelona. His scientific activity has focused on the study of epigenetics and genetic material modifications involved in different diseases, especially cancer.
“Science communication is more necessary today than ever before. Society needs rigorous and understandable information to better understand diseases, biomedical advances, and also the challenges we face as researchers. Having a publication such as Forbes highlight this work also helps raise awareness of the importance of bringing science closer to society,” says Dr. Manel Esteller.
In addition to his research work, the recognition also highlights his science communication activities through books, collaborations with media outlets, conferences, and participation on social media. His publications include No soy mi ADN, Hablemos de cáncer, Cartas a un joven investigador, and El secreto de la vida eterna.
Recently, Dr. Esteller has also maintained an active presence on social media and digital science communication platforms, participating in podcasts, interviews, and public events to explain accessible issues related to cancer, genetics, and aging. Through platforms such as X, where he regularly shares scientific content and reflections on biomedical research, he helps bring science closer to broad and diverse audiences.
Considered one of the world’s most highly cited scientists, according to Stanford University, Dr. Esteller has received, among other distinctions, the National Genetics Award, the Severo Ochoa Award, and the Rey Jaime I Award.
