RRI: Responsible Research & Innovation

What is RRI?

Responsible Research & Innovation (RRI) is a research strategy promoted and defined by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme “Horizon 2020 (2014-2020)” known now as Horizon Europe (2021-2027). This is a collective commitment based on a process of collaboration between the scientific community and society, encouraging the interaction between different stakeholders or groups of interest (civil society organisations, the educational and scientific community, policy decision-makers and industry) considering criteria such as ethics, sustainability, and social desirability.

The objective of the RRI is to carry out research and innovation with and for society (Science with and for Society program) with the aim of bringing scientific and technological improvements back to society. For this reason this initiative requires foresight, reflexivity, inclusiveness, and the ability to adapt to change in response to the values and expectations of society, stakeholders and changing of environment.

RRI at IIB Sant Pau

IIB Sant Pau is aligned with the principles of the RRI and work through to meet and anticipate society’s needs in a transparent, open, inclusive and sustainable perspective. For this purpose, and according to the institution’s mission, we are building an institutional impact strategy that will enable us to design a new assessment policy to measure the impact of research that adopts European commitments.

Our Institution encourages the implementation of these principles as a working framework, and we develop initiatives in each of the RRI agendas. The goals we have set to work on the 6 RRI agendas are:

  1. Governance:

  • Incorporate RRI principles into the governance of the institution.
  • Foster RRI at all stages of any research project.
  • Define the institutional impact literacy (what, who, how and why).
  1. Ethics:

  • Provide areas for ethical reflection.
  • Promote and encourage integrity in research.
  1. Gender Equality:

  • Ensure gender balance in decision making.
  • Gender perspective in teams and project content.
  1. Open Access (Open Science)

  • Ensure the implementation of open access policies established by the institution.
  • Fostering open access in research.
  1. Citizen Participation

  • Facilitate mechanisms for citizen participation.
  • Promote their participation in research projects allowing a joint development and decision making.
  1. Scientific Education

  • Foster multi-stakeholder collaboration (formal and non-formal education providers, organisations and civil society).
  • Encourage critical thinking and scientific culture among citizens, as well as scientific interest among young people.

The objective of the Unit is to promote, design or implement specific tools and actions to help researchers to improve their research proposals and to encourage society to get involved in science.

Due to the cross-cutting actions described in the RRI Plan, the Unit works in a cross-cutting manner with other units, more closely with: the Knowledge Management Unit (UGC) in relation to open science, the Scientific Communication and Culture Unit (UCCC+i), in terms of activities related to citizen participation and science education, and with the Human Resources Unit (URRHH), in terms of the implementation and monitoring of the principles set out in the European Charter for Researchers (HSR4R).

In addition, the Responsible of the Unit, is member of the commission negotiating the new IR-HSCSP Equality Plan and is the Coordinator of the Research Working Group (WG) of the Health and Gender Commission (CdSiG) of the HSCSP.

She is also member of the Community of Practice Hipàtia d’Alexandria (coordinated by AQuAs) carrying out specific actions to promote changes in health research centres in order to eliminate gender inequality in the Catalan research system.
